When we design any of our tool sets, we start out by purchasing the OEM BMW factory tools, we analyze them, and then we set out to produce a tool set that does not compromise OEM quality or accuracy, is less expensive to manufacture and easier to use. We almost never copy the factory tools (or anyone's tools), we take a fresh look at the function required and usually come up with a better, easier and more accurate way of doing things. Our M62-tu kit is a perfect example of this innovative re-engineering technique. Almost every tool in our kit accomplishes its function in a different and more accurate way than the OEM tool. G.A.S. M60-M62-M62tu Cam Lock Blocks key features:

  • Precision CNC Machined from 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum alloy to OEM tolerances.
  • Anodized to protect finish and add a hardened wear surface.
  • Unlike the OEM BMW tools our cam lock blocks can be installed and secured in place one at a time. They also work on either cylinder head because they are not a two piece bridged design like the OEM blocks. If you've used the two piece units before you will really appreciate this key feature.

G.A.S. M60-M62-M62tu Cam Lock Blocks additional features:

  • Our blocks are held down securely with a simple wing nut on the existing journal cap studs. The OEM tool requires an expensive extra clamp that threads into the spark plug hole, and most aftermarket kits offer you nothing to secure the lock blocks in place.
  • Just to prove that our aluminum cam lock blocks with their hard anodized finish are just as strong as the mild steel OEM blocks, we applied over 100 pound feet of torque to the end of the camshaft while using our blocks to hold the cams from rotating. Even at that extreme torque there was no detectable movement or damage to the blocks. We did this only to demonstrate the durability of our blocks. During normal use of our tool kit (or any cam tool kit), you never apply more than about 20 pound feet of torque to the cams while being held by the lock blocks.

G.A.S. M60-M62-M62tu VANOS Timing Tool key features:

  • The G.A.S. VANOS alignment tool mounts to a very high precision location on the head and has only one critical, and easily held tolerance to maintain during manufacture. Our tool mounts to the VANOS solenoid location and easily holds a positional tolerance of less than one thousandth of an inch (.001") at the timing plate.
  • Because of the unique and simple design of our VANOS Timing Tool it can be manufactured at a fraction of the cost of the OEM BMW style timing tool. You get more accuracy at a lower cost with our tool.

G.A.S. M60-M62-M62tu VANOS Timing Tool additional features:

  • Our VANOS timing tool works on either head by simply flipping the tool over to use the alternate pin location. The OEM BMW tool has one expensive tool for the left head and another for the right head.
  • The tool is Precision CNC Machined from 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum and anodized to protect the finish and add a hardened wear surface.

Why the G.A.S. VANOS Timing Tool is more accurate than the OEM BMW timing tool::

The OEM tool uses a complicated design of arms and pins, bolts to non-precision locations on the head, and requires you to tighten the bolts while trying to align the tool to two flat surfaces on the top and front of the cylinder head. Not only is the procedure a little sketchy and prone to possible inaccurate fitment, but the OEM design requires extreme accuracy during manufacturing due to how the arms are designed, located, and held in place.

Maybe I trust BMW to hold an extremely tight manufacturing tolerance on their $400.00 VANOS timing tool, but what about the aftermarket tool kits, most are made in China. Add the imprecise mounting of the tool to the cylinder head, and who knows what you'll end up with for accuracy with an OEM style timing tool, especially one not manufactured by BMW.

Since the G.A.S. VANOS alignment tool mounts to the very high precision location of the VANOS solenoid hole and the only critical tolerance we need to hold is the distance from the hole in the timing plate to the dowel pin holes, our tool easily holds a positional tolerance of plus or minus less than one thousandth of an inch (.001").

  • Includes thumbscrew tension bolt with machined tip, not just a piece of threaded rod.
  • Thumbscrew is black oxide coated to prevent rust.

G.A.S. M60-M62-M62tu VANOS Adjustment Wrench key features:

  • Precision CNC Machined from 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum alloy and anodized to protect the finish and add a hardened wear surface.
  • Our one piece spanner wrench style tool is much easier to use than the OEM two piece tool that requires the use of their tool, a ratchet and a socket. Our tool also offers much greater visibility in use.
  • Our VANOS timing wrench uses hardened steel pins for durability and works on both left & right heads.

Our M62-tu Cam and VANOS tool sets are available two different ways:

  • Master Cam Tool kit includes two pairs of Cam Lock Blocks, two VANOS Timing Tools, two Chain Tensioner Locking Tools, and all other tools shown. With the Master Kit you can time both cylinder banks at one time.

  • Master Cam Tool Kit Rental, requires a security deposit and includes a two week rental period.

We are sorry but due to the typical "one time use" requirement of specialty tool kits for most people, we do not accept return of these tool kits for refunds. Specialty tools kit can be returned for exchange only due to manufacturing defects.
